Review: Malibu Kitchen

Earlier in the week, I took my friend Jackie along with me to do a cupcakery review. We were back in Malibu again, so thanks to Google, I was able to find out that a local store, Malibu Kitchen, sold cupcakes. We decided to drive over and give this place a shot.

The store was super cute and homey, which I loved. I wish I would have known before I got there and we probably would have bought lunch as well.

They had four choices of flavors, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet and carrot. The vanilla and chocolate came in larger sizes as well as regular, so I decided to split a vanilla with Jackie and got a red velvet for myself.

They also had giant cupcakes that Jackie tried to convince me to buy. I thought the vanilla cupcake had a nice touch with all of the decorations on top. They kept the cupcakes in a refrigerated display case, which made them a little harder to eat since the frosting was pretty hard.

The frosting was about as thick as the cake, which I was excited about, but it was still a little overwhelming. The cake was dryer than I like, but Jackie said that it tasted fine to her. We ate about 2/3 of the cupcake and couldn't finish it. It was so big and incredibly sweet, so we took the rest home.

This is proof that the cupcakes were enormous. It was bigger than Jackie's hand! I ate the red velvet later and realized after I had finished it that I forgot to snap a photo. At least this one shows what they looked like at a distance.

This was a much more reasonable size for a cupcake and I liked it a lot better because it was room temperature at that point. The cupcake itself was very moist, but it didn't have a very strong red velvet taste. The frosting was very sweet, with lots of it on top of the cupcake. I ate about half of it and had to wait a bit to finish it since it was so sweet. Overall, I really liked this place. I was impressed that they even made cupcakes, so I may have to go back and try a few of their other desserts as well since they looked super tasty.
